My True Story
I’ve been in the computer industry since 1978, long before the internet. I’ve saved computer companies millions of dollars. I was on the phone with the folks in Palo Alto on a daily basis when Silicon Valley was developing the WWW.
I had a fairly nice network cable which ran to my office. It was costing a lot of money. I had name servers and web servers, and a LAN with network routers and hubs. It was costing a lot of money. I was running Linux as my operating system of choice. I was using Bind for my name servers, and I was using Apache for my web servers. I even had my office on a backup generator. It was costing a lot of money... Hmm, costing a lot of money seems to be a theme.
My office LAN with its’ name servers and web servers worked great. I was managing about 60 web sites at the time. I was a true web hosting company and had a small client base. I had complete control over the name servers and web servers. I had backup servers which I built from parts, and all was good.
One day I decided to take a vacation day. Once, I was even able to take the weekend off, which in the entrepreneurial world is a rare treat. All was still okay, even though I didn’t have a team of network engineers watching over my systems and network, but I did worry about it. What kind of relaxation is that! All was still relatively good.
Then, one day, the network cable to my office went out for a few days, and that was the last time I was going to let that happen. That is the day I decided to stop being a true web hosting company, and decided to be a virtual web hosting company.
A true web hosting company has all the worries of keeping it’s servers and network intact. That is their primary business, and they do well at it. A virtual web hosting company uses the services of a true web hosting company, and hires them to do all the worries. A virtual web hosting company is able to host its’ own web sites, and is also able to host client web sites!
Myth: All I want is web hosting. If a company can do that, then one is as good as another.
I’ve been trying out different web hosting companies for the last few years. I had been using the services of a well-known web hosting company that specializes in hosting for businesses, and is probably one of the most successful in terms of number of customers. It wasn’t until I switched over to my present hosting company that I discovered wonderful improvements that were missing. I have managed to eliminate spam from interrupting my business. That was something my old host was doing nothing about and had no filters whatsoever. If I had stayed a true web hosting company, I could have implemented spam filters on my own. Because I had the wrong hosting service, by managing over 100 web sites, I was getting 600 spams a day. With the new hosting service, I get zero spams.
To my extreme delight, I discovered my web hosting company has great ethics. They have a reliability guarantee that their servers AND networks will be up. I think the guarantee is something like 99.5%. Last month, they missed by a tenth of a percent. To my amazement, they immediately issued a prorated credit!
Since I use such as great web hosting company, as a virtual web hosting company which does everything, that great service goes to my customers, and when I get to go on vacation I don’t worry about a thing!
There are different levels of virtual web hosting companies. In my opinion, some of the large companies who do web hosting situations are sly. Yes, they will do what they are paid for. If you want more, they now have their foot in the door to sell more services.
You get what you pay for. If you’re lucky.
Here is an example of a virtual web hosting situation you are probably familiar with because you’ve heard their commercials on the radio. There are some really large, well-known businesses who say you can have a web site for as little as $15. Guess what you get for $15. It’s not much at all. Is it dishonest? No, not at all. They meet their terms of the agreement, and they are under no obligations to provide you with an education or tell you all about their underlying motives for making such incredible offers. It’s to sell you more services. The $15 is actually money well spent for some people.
If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
The main problem with this $15 offer is that there are usually some parts missing that could otherwise give a small business a more adequate internet presence. The typical part that is most overlooked is a marketing strategy. The $15 is annual, and they will be glad to set you up as automatically renewing, even if they change the prices.
The good news is that some small businesses that are not very concerned about internet presence can benefit from this extremely basic service. The $15 provides no services other than what they state in their agreement. Many businesses may be disappointed with their results, but there is a solution to that. When the customer finds that it is not working, they contact the company which has their foot in the door to sell higher priced services.
